This a start to what will be a large site covering each track.
So far I've got a page of car, tuning, and driving info, plus guides for the trouble spots at
Autobahn, Alps, Auvergne, and Zone forward, Schwarzwald backward, and Corsica, Normandy, and MC3 both forward and backward.
(more to follow)
My goal here is to offer some driving tips for Porsche Unleashed (aka Porsche 2000).
I've written some up before, but one problem with these is the difficulty in describing a visual experience in words.
Trying to describe "the corner after the corner that's just after the house after the tunnel" doesn't cut it.
Words are great, but sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.
Yet telling beginners to simply follow some experienced online racers and see where they go and what they do
is not the answer either; if they could follow them that closely, they wouldn't need the advice.
So I'm doing pictures -- screengrabbed examples of the routes and techniques involved in accomplishing a quick time.
At each track I'm doing, I'm not trying to offer a complete "walkthrough" type guide ("you'll find a box of shotgun shells in the 3rd vase on the left").
Instead, I'm describing what I see as the most critical problem areas at the tracks, the ones where newbies,
and even experienced racers, most often mess up and lose time.
The lines and techniques I show won't necessarily always be the absolute fastest possible, but they are certainly good
for top 50 (and better) times.
I'd love to have more info up, and I'll continue to upload pages every day or so, but it takes time.
The reason?
Mostly it's because putting together a replay that shows a technique reasonably well, then taking and processing
screenshots, is very time-consuming.
So is coming up with a format.
Having some up with a format -- image sizes and html template -- the rest should go somewhat faster, and
I hope to be able to put up further pages every few days, eventually covering all the tracks.
The pages I've done are examples of what I think is a good format; if you have any comments, please contact me with them.
I may or may not take suggestions -- I'm semi-obstinate -- but I can certainly see the possibility that someone could
see something that I can't, and that it just might be a great idea.
Please don't be offended if you do make a suggestion and I don't use it.
In feedback I've gotten so far, one thing that really stands out is that not everyone drives these tracks the same way.
I know that many of my own ideas are idiosyncratic.
From my earliest days with Porsche Unleashed, I've often taken routes or lines that other racers didn't.
I've also changed my mind when I've seen I was wrong, and you'll see some examples of these places
when I get to Zone (the foundry) and the MC's (various railing/bounces techniques).
On the other hand, on Normandy forward, the route through the village I describe is one that I used when I started out
that hardly any other fast racer did; virtually everybody uses it now.
So if you think you have a faster route or faster line, use it against fast racers.
If you're right you'll gain time on them; if you're wrong, you can always change.
